The cool breeze wafted over their skin, drying the sheen of sweat that had gathered after the intense round of sex they had experienced. Gabe watched the clouds drift lazily by and stroked Emma’s back as she lay tucked against him, her head on his shoulder, her hands tracing circles on his chest. His mind was empty for once, at peace, and he felt like he could focus and see everything more clearly now. And it was all due to the woman lying next to him.

“What does this mean?” She ran her fingers over the tattooed words on his chest.

He placed his hand over hers, the memory of the meaning and the day he had it inked filling him. “It’s an old Crow saying my grandfather used to tell me. You already possess everything necessary to become great.”

“It’s a beautiful saying. You were close?”

“Fishing again, Emma?” He teased, then sobered. “Yeah, I spent a lot of time with him when I was younger. He told me lots of stories about Montana, about history, and he was kind of a buffer between my dad and me. Not that my dad and I didn’t get along, but I think even back then I knew I didn’t want to be a rancher. I didn’t know what I wanted to do but my grandfather would say, you have everything you need to become who you are destined to be. That’s what the words meant to me. I got the tattoo to remind me of that and him.”

She was quiet for a long moment, her hand pressed to his heart. “He must have been proud of your books.”

“He never lived to see them published. But they’re dedicated to him. He’s the reason I wrote them.” Gabe swallowed past a suddenly tight throat.

She squeezed him in an awkward hug, made difficult from their position lying on the blanket.

“Is that your one thing? Writing?” She asked after a few minutes.

He grinned. “Who would have thought City Slickers would have stuck with you, Miss Emma? No, writing isn’t my one thing. It’s important, a big part of who I am, but it’s not the biggest. I actually don’t know what it is yet. I’m still figuring it out.” He shifted slightly so he could look down at her. “What about you? You’ve clearly been thinking about it.”

She let out a breath and studied the sky. “Well, you know I like to plan, and goals are a big part of that. Knowing my one thing would feed into that. I thought I could easily answer that question but . . .”

“But you can’t,” he finished quietly.

She shook her head. “No. And it really bothers me. Maybe a month ago, I would have had an answer, but I think it would have been wrong.”

He tightened his arm around her and pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “Maybe that’s okay. Maybe it’s the right time now to start thinking about what you really want.”

She snuggled against him and made a noncommittal noise.
